Climbing Kilimanjaro Machame route

Tour Overview

The 7-day Machame Route is one of the most admired ways to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest mountain. This trail offers a mix of beauty and challenge, taking trekkers through some of the mountain’s most striking scenery. The journey begins in a lush rainforest and gradually ascends through moorlands and alpine desert before reaching the snowy summit.

Each day involves about 6 to 7 hours of walking, allowing hikers to adapt to the changing altitude. Although the ascent demands stamina and determination, reaching Uhuru Peak rewards adventurers with spectacular panoramic views. The Machame Route is ideal for fit and experienced trekkers looking for both excitement and unforgettable landscapes.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Trekking From Machame Gate To Machame Camp

The day begins with a scenic 50-minute drive from Moshi to the Machame Gate, passing through small local villages nestled along the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro. After registration at the gate, the trek starts along a narrow, winding trail through a lush rainforest. The route gradually climbs a forested ridge filled with ferns, moss, and towering trees before arriving at Machame Camp for the night.

Elevation: 5,380 ft → 9,350 ft
Distance: 11 km / 7 miles
Trekking Time: 5–7 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
Overnight: Machame Camp

We depart from the edge of the rainforest and begin climbing along a steeper, rockier trail that leads to higher terrain. As we reach the Shira Plateau, the landscape opens into heather fields and moorlands, offering beautiful views across the valleys. The route continues over a wide river gorge before reaching Shira 2 Camp, where we rest for the night.

Elevation: 9,350 ft → 12,500 ft
Distance: 5 km / 3 miles
Trekking Time: 4–7 hours
Habitat: Heath zone
Overnight: Shira 2 Camp

We continue our ascent eastward along a ridge before turning southeast toward the impressive Lava Tower, a striking 300-foot volcanic rock formation. After a rest and lunch break near the tower, we descend toward Barranco Camp, passing through the fascinating Senecio Forest, where giant groundsels create an almost otherworldly landscape.

Although today begins and ends at a similar altitude, the time spent at higher elevation plays a key role in helping your body acclimatize for the summit ahead.

Shira Camp → Lava Tower

  • Elevation: 12,500 ft → 15,190 ft

  • Distance: 7 km / 4 miles

  • Trekking Time: 4–5 hours

  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

Lava Tower → Barranco Camp

  • Elevation: 15,190 ft → 13,044 ft

  • Distance: 3 km / 2 miles

  • Trekking Time: 2–3 hours

  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

Overnight: Barranco Camp

The day starts with a descent into a deep ravine at the base of the Great Barranco Wall. From there, we climb the steep but non-technical 900-foot rock face, an exciting and memorable part of the trek. Once at the top, the trail continues across a series of gentle ridges and valleys before descending into the Karanga Valley. A final short but steep climb brings us to Karanga Camp, our stop for the night.

This shorter day is designed to help with acclimatization, preparing you for the higher altitudes ahead.

Elevation: 13,044 ft → 13,107 ft
Distance: 5 km / 3 miles
Trekking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Overnight: Karanga Camp

From Karanga Camp, we rejoin the main trail that connects with the Mweka Route and continue our steady climb through rocky, barren terrain toward Barafu Camp. By reaching this point, you complete the Southern Circuit, which provides stunning views of the summit from several different perspectives.

En Barafu Camp, we set up camp, rest, and have an early dinner in preparation for the challenging summit attempt ahead. From here, both Mawenzi and Kibo peaks are clearly visible, offering inspiring views before the final ascent.

Elevation: 13,107 ft → 15,331 ft
Distance: 4 km / 2 miles
Trekking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Overnight: Barafu Camp

Just after midnight, we begin the final and most demanding part of the climb — the ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and all of Africa. This section is both mentally and physically challenging, with freezing temperatures and strong winds. We move slowly in the darkness, taking short breaks along the way.

As we approach Stella Point (18,900 ft), the first light of dawn reveals a breathtaking sunrise over Mawenzi Peak, one of the most memorable sights of the journey. A final push takes us to Uhuru Peak (19,341 ft) — the ultimate goal and an unforgettable achievement.

After enjoying the summit, we begin our long descent. We return first to Barafu Camp for a short rest and lunch, then continue down to Mweka Camp through rocky terrain that can be tough on the knees — trekking poles are highly recommended. The camp sits within the upper forest, where mist and light rain are common by late afternoon. Here, we celebrate with a final dinner and a well-deserved night’s sleep.

On the final day, we complete the descent from Mweka Camp down to Mweka Gate, where climbers receive their official summit certificates. At lower altitudes, trails may be wet and muddy, so sturdy footwear is recommended. From the gate, we continue a short walk to Mweka Village, where a vehicle will be waiting to transport the group back to the hotel in Moshi, marking the end of the adventure.
